Embracing the Holiday Spirit with Your Pets

The holiday season is here — the time for over-the-top lights, endless mithai, and awkward family WhatsApp group selfies. For us pet parents, it’s also a golden chance to ensure our furry (and occasionally bossy) family members are part of the festivities. Let’s talk about how you can celebrate the holidays with your pets while keeping things as chaos-free as possible.

1. Pet-Safe Decorations

Deck the halls without creating a scene from a Bollywood disaster movie. Decorations can be irresistible to pets, who see shiny things as either toys or snacks.

  • Skip harmful plants: Marigolds might be festive, but other plants like mistletoe or poinsettias (if you’ve gone full Christmas) are a strict no-no. Fake flowers FTW!
  • Secure your tree (or your rangoli): Cats think Christmas trees are their personal jungle gym. Dogs think rangoli powders are a new snack flavor. Keep both out of paw’s reach.
  • Avoid glass baubles: Because no one wants to spend Christmas Eve explaining “shattered ornaments” to their vet.

2. Festive Fashion for Pets

Indian celebrations mean one thing: outfits! If we’re pulling out our finest kurtas and sarees, why not our pets too?

  • Lightweight and comfy: Think festive bandanas or simple desi-themed collars rather than heavy jackets. Comfort > Aesthetic.
  • DIY options: Wrap a colorful dupatta around their collar or craft a mini pagdi for Instagram-worthy pictures.
  • No force: If your pet looks at you like you’ve lost your mind when you approach with a sherwani, let it go. No judgment.

3. Desi Treats for Your Pets

While you’re feasting on laddoos and biryani, make sure your pet doesn’t feel left out.

  • DIY treats: Whip up pet-friendly laddoos with pumpkin and peanut butter (sans sugar, obviously).
  • Festive meal: A small portion of boiled chicken, sweet potato and some cinnamon powder will have them wagging tails or purring in approval.
  • Caution: No ghee-dripping sweets, spicy gravies, or chocolate. Basically, keep the gulab jamuns to yourself.

4. Include Pets in Festive Activities

Why should pets miss out on the action? Let them be part of the fun.

  • Family photos: A group pic with your pet in the center is a must. Bonus points if they’re the calmest one in the frame.
  • Evening walks: Take them out to admire the neighborhood’s Christmas lights. Dogs love the stroll; you’ll love the insta-worthy snaps.
  • Interactive toys: If you’re busy entertaining guests, new toys can keep them occupied. Think puzzle feeders or treat-dispensing balls.

5. Gifting for Pets

They’ve been your sanity saviors all year. Time to spoil them.

  • Homemade goodies: Nothing says love like treats baked in your kitchen.
  • A new accessory: A shiny leash, a fancy food bowl, or a personalized collar could be the perfect gift.
  • Donation drive: Buy extra goodies and donate to local shelters. Your pet will approve.

6. Safety First

Between crackers, diyas, and mithai thieves (looking at you, cats), keeping pets safe is essential.

  • Noise control: If firecrackers are popping off, keep your pets indoors with some calming music or a snug blanket fort.
  • Guest-proofing: Not every pet loves strangers. Give them a quiet room to chill if needed.
  • Fire hazards: Diyas and candles are great for aesthetics, but they’re accidents waiting to happen with wagging tails around.

7. Capture the Memories

The holiday season isn’t complete without a million photos. Arrange a photo shoot with festive backdrops — fairy lights, colorful rugs, or a “pets in desi outfits” theme. Pro tip: Bribe with treats for better poses.

8. Share the Joy

It’s not just about our pets. Spread some love to those in need.

  • Donate locally: Share pet food, old blankets, or toys with animal shelters.
  • Foster or adopt: If you’ve got the bandwidth, the holidays are a perfect time to bring in a furry friend in need.
  • Support local businesses: Buy festive treats or accessories for your pets from small Indian businesses.

9. Respect Your Pet’s Personality

Your dog might be a social butterfly ready to host the party, but your cat might prefer observing from a safe corner. Let them celebrate in their own way.

10. Start New Traditions

Make the holidays truly special by creating traditions that include your pets. Whether it’s a morning chai ritual with your pup or a quiet evening cuddle with your cat, these moments make the season magical.

Holidays are about love, joy, and endless snacks (for us, not our pets). Including our pets in these celebrations makes them even more memorable. So, pull out the treats, prep the camera, and celebrate like your pet is the guest of honor. And remember, no mithai for the furballs — unless you want your vet to be the one celebrating on your dime!
